Grupo Nabeiro – Delta Cafés is an example of how innovation and social responsibility can go hand in hand. With a strong record of commitment to environmental sustainability, the Group has shown that it is possible to go beyond coffee production by integrating circular economy practices into several areas of its operation. One of the most notable projects is the transformation of old uniforms into community blankets, an action that brings together technological innovation and social solidarity.

This project not only helps reduce textile waste. It also benefits the community directly, especially older people in vulnerable situations. It shows the positive impact that sustainable actions can have on people and on the planet. In this context, we spoke with Rita Nabeiro, Administradora do Grupo Nabeiro-Delta Cafés, to understand what motivated this initiative, how the uniform transformation process was carried out, and the results it brought, both environmental and social.

What motivated Grupo Nabeiro to start this project to transform uniforms into solidarity blankets?

Environmental sustainability and social responsibility have always been part of the DNA of Grupo Nabeiro – Delta Cafés. This commitment inspired the initiative to transform old uniforms into 100% recycled blankets, offered to 400 older people, bringing together innovation, circularity, and solidarity.
The production of waste and its disposal in landfill remains one of the greatest environmental challenges in Portugal and worldwide. In the national context, and surprisingly, more than 50% of municipal waste still goes to landfill, despite European targets for reduction and recovery. This reality leads to major environmental impacts, namely: greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, potential contamination of soil and groundwater, and the loss of material resources that could be reintegrated into the circular economy.
The textile sector is particularly problematic: it is estimated that only 1% of textile waste worldwide is recycled into new products of equal value, which reinforces the importance of innovative solutions for reuse and upcycling.
Aware of this reality, Grupo Nabeiro developed this project to recover obsolete uniforms, avoiding their diversion to landfill. Beyond the direct environmental benefit, this project reflects the spirit of solidarity and community that defines the Group, by allocating the blankets to institutions and people in situations of vulnerability.
